Yangon · residential · 4 photographs

A roadside shophouse in Yangon with three bays of folding green shutters, ventilation blockwork above, and a mono-pitch roof over a clerestory upper room.

01 / 03

The building faces directly onto a shaded street lined with market stalls. Its ground floor is divided into three bays by exposed concrete columns, each bay closed by folding metal shutters painted dark green with aluminium framing. Above the shutters, panels of open blockwork laid in a stepped pattern let air and light through. A flat rendered fascia band runs across the whole frontage.

Set back above that fascia is an upper room under a mono-pitch metal roof with a deep overhang. It is lit by a run of small sliding windows in white frames along the street side. One photograph shows this upper space from inside: a long narrow room with a concrete floor, walls of panels between steel studs, and the corrugated roof deck and portal frame left exposed overhead.

The record also includes photographs taken with the shutters folded open, showing the interior in use with tables and chairs, and one 3D render of the same building shown with a tiled roof, timber trim, and a signboard on the street elevation.
